Women Empowerment through Entrepreneurship

Women Empowerment

Empowerment is the ability of an individual to make choices regarding his or her life. It enhances the capacity to make effective choices and translate the choices into desired actions and outcomes. Empowerment enables people to control their lives: set their own agendas, gain skills, increase self-confidence, solve problems, and develop self-reliance. It is both a process and an outcome.
Women empowerment refers to equipping women with rights and powers so that they can play a major role in society.
Entrepreneurship is a powerful weapon of women’s empowerment. Empowerment leads to self-fulfillment of their needs. They become aware of where they are going, what their position is in the society, their status; existence, and rights.
According to United Nations Global Compact, there are seven women empowerment principles.
  1. Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality.
  2. Treat all women and men fairly at work — respect and support human rights and non-discrimination.
  3. Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all women and men workers.
  4. Promote education, training, and professional development for women. Implement enterprise development, supply chain, and marketing practices that empower women.
  5. Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy.
  6. Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality.

The women empowerment program in the budget of the fiscal year 2016/17 is presented below:

  • The arrangement has been made for the implementation of the President Women Upliftment Program in order to implement women empowerment programs including the elimination of gender discrimination, skill and entrepreneurship development, and academic research fellowship programs.
  • Skill development and orientation-related pieces of training will be provided to won-men to develop their entrepreneurship capacity. Seed capital will be provided to support women to be self-employed through entrepreneurship development.
  • Girl education and skill development programs will be implemented in order to end the violence against women caused by early marriage and dowry. Awareness programs will be broadcasted in the local language by the media.
