Introduction to Evolution of Management Thought
Management practices evolved ever since the dawn of civilization. For case in point, construction of pyramids of Egyptian civilization in 4000 B.C., administration of Mohenjodaro and Harappa cities of ancient Arya civilization in 2000 B.C., Lord Buddha’s order and Sangh, organization of Catholic Church, and organized governing systems of civic life in ancient Greece are well-recognized undertaking management endeavors. For all that, the practitioners explored and studied management functions and processes relying on some impracticable and abstract theories developed by early management practitioners.
Also, some other managers and practitioners [like Robert Owen, Charles Babbage, and Adam Smith] from the industrial revolution era significantly contributed to recognizing the management phenomena and accelerating the advanced practices. Management gradually emerged as a science and profession only after the industrial revolution. At present, modern management is an intellectual heritage. Several disciplines like; anthropology, economics, engineering, mathematics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology have helped shape modern management practices. Yet the modern management is in a developmental stage.
Management thought is a theoretical account developed on the basis of some experiments and practices that help guide the managers and team towards the goal assessment. During the nineteenth century several management thoughts evolved and series of budding management thoughts to the management theory jungle. Therefore the knowledge of the evolution of management thought or management theory is most essential to grasp. This helps managers to grapple with future success, confront competition, develop professionalism and refine one’s own perception and vision in contemporary culture.
